Consistent Mask Leaking - What Can I do to Fix It?

Are you Fighting with your Mask?

Is your mask leaking waking you up? It's common with being a CPAP user. Many people like to over tighten their mask to ensure their mask doesn’t leak, however there are people who are the opposite trying to prevent mask lines. There is a happy medium to having your mask fit. I fit my mask by putting the pressure on, and lay down to adjust. Adjusting your mask sitting up, will have a different fit when you lie down, it’s usually tighter.

Making Sure you have a Proper Fitting Mask

Having a proper fitting mask is crucial to therapy. Your mask needs to be fitted to you. That’s why they come in different sizes. Everyone’s facial structure is different. If you use a mask that is too small, chances are that it will slide up or cause sores, or it could be too big. Both can leave you with mask leaks.

Push your Pillow Back

Are you a side sleeper? Sleeping on your side with a CPAP mask can be tricky. A lot of people find their mask to leak because their pillow is pushing against the mask causing the seal to break. To prevent having your mask leak while sleeping on your side, it’s best to push the pillow back or use a CPAP pillow that has the indents for the mask.

Make Sure to Wash your Face

Not getting a good seal on your mask? Make sure you are washing your face before bed. Having a clean dry face helps to prevent mask leaks, as well as keeps your cushion lasting longer. Avoid using astringents as most have alcohol in them which can break down the cushion.

Is your Mask Sliding Around?

If you are finding that your mask is sliding around, make sure that you are not using lotion before putting your mask on. Lotion acts as a lubricant, causing the mask to move. It also breaks down the cushion faster. Which means you will be replacing the cushion sooner. Not to mention you will probably over tighten your mask to prevent leaks, that could lead to pressure sores.

Don’t Forget to Clean your Mask

I would say the number one issue when it comes to mask leaks is due to a dirty mask. We have oils and dirt on our skin that gets passed on to our mask. If you're not cleaning regularly the cushion will become slippery from soaking up the oils. This can cause your mask to slide around, or worse leaving skin irritations. It’s best to wipe your cushion down daily, and wash it weekly.
